Meet The Tour Master - Peter Smith

Peter Smith is one of, if not the world's most experienced wine tour specialist. Not only has he been operating tours to the world's finest wineries since1993, but he has developed a profound knowledge of winemaking that has earned him the respect and friendship of many of the top winemakers around the globe. He is a member of the Jurade of St. Emilion and the Chablisiens of Chablis - the winemakers brotherhood. He's also a member of the Wine Educators Society. He is an acclaimed wine and travel journalist and currently writes for the Sommelier Journal (www.sommelierjournal.com) as well as his freelance work. Regarded as a leading expert in the wine tourism industry, Peter has been a keen speaker at wine tourism seminars and has consulted for wineries in developing their wine tourism programs.

A tour led by Peter is an experience in deluxe VIP travel combined with an education in winemaking. Without realizing how much they are "working" during the tour, his guests come home with wealth of knowledge about the region and its wines that is simply not possible without being there with him.

With a background in food, wine and hospitality management, Peter is well qualified to cater to the most demanding needs of our clients - in past lives he has managed hotels and restaurants, and for several years he and his wife Holly catered to the world's elite on private yachts as a captain/cook team.

His attention to detail and customer care extends from the minute he starts planning an itinerary for his clients through every aspect of their tour, from special dietary needs to arranging visits to personal favorite wineries, with a genuine concern for the comfort, well-being and enjoyment of each one of his guests. When he is unable to personally host a tour, his hand-picked guides share his commitment to top-quality service.

His list of past clients extends from wine consumers to celebrities, to international business and community organizations to wine professionals who have used him for study tours, and he treats each and every one of his clients as the most important he's ever had!

What We Do

WineWorldTours is dedicated to providing the extraordinary "life experience" one finds tasting, discovering and adventuring with wine...and everything wine-related like dining at Michelin starred restaurants; experiencing the artisan mastery of world class olive oil, chocolate, cheese and sausage makers and more; the culinary forays into food pairing with cooking classes and demonstrations; and, the unique and comforting accommodations in above-the-ordinary castles, villas, chateaux, wineries and converted monasteries.

We provide customized and personalized wine country adventures in the world's most prestigious wine regions of France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Argentina, Chile, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. And, our private driver - wine guide do all the driving as well as provide expert wine commentary and insider information and provide the colorful context for a most meaningful and personal experience.

Of course, nothing is more fun and memorable than traveling with like-minded friends especially when they love wine and great food and so, for those with groups of 6-20 fellow wine, dinner, cigar, golf or tennis club members or any other "affinity" or business group, we'll customize a insider trip that should satisfy all your wine and culinary tastes.

We know that sophisticated travelers love to rediscover their favorite cultural and historical centers: to revel in past haunts or experience what's new or what had escaped them on prior visits. As a result, all of our wine world tours start and/or end (your choice) in a major gateway city such as Madrid, Barcelona, Lisbon, Paris, Nice, Cannes, Rome, Florence, Milan, Buenos Aires, Santiago, Capetown, Sydney, Melbourne or Auckland.

The Benefits of Having a Guide

Our Clients tell us that having a guide adds a lot to your tour and makes all the difference in the world:

  • No Drinking and driving worries – apart from the obvious common sense reasons, France in particular now is extremely strict, with a 0.05 alcohol limit and severe penalties. From March 2013 all cars must carry their own breathalyzer.
  • Navigation – even with very detailed directions, some wineries are not easy to locate – and GPS will often take you to a similar name, but completely different location.
  • Language – rather obvious, but many of the more interesting (especially smaller) wineries do not speak English.
  • Background knowledge – this is probably the most important. Though each winery will have a host, their focus is on their own property and promoting their wines. The guide will not only be able to give you the answers to the questions they didn’t volunteer or you didn’t want to put them on the spot to answer, but will also have all kinds of local knowledge – from the geology and history, to personalities and even juicy gossip.
  • Peter Smith – if Peter is your host, although he may not be as current as some of our local guides on specific local issues, he has a world-wide experience that allows him to constantly draw comparisons with other regions, vastly enriching the experience of visiting a given region.
